Understanding Usui Reiki
History of Usui Reiki
Usui Reiki, the most widely practiced form of Reiki today, was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. Born in 1865, Usui was a dedicated spiritual seeker who studied various religious and healing practices throughout his life.
The story of Reiki’s discovery begins with Usui’s 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama in 1922. During this retreat, Usui reportedly experienced a spiritual awakening and received the ability to channel healing energy. This event marked the birth of what we now know as Usui Reiki.
After his experience, Usui began to practice and teach this healing method in Japan. He opened a clinic in Tokyo and started training others in the Reiki techniques. Before his death in 1926, Usui had trained several Reiki Masters who continued to spread his teachings.
One of the students, Chujiro Hayashi, played a crucial role in spreading Reiki beyond Japan. Hayashi trained Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to Hawaii and then to the mainland United States in the late 1930’s. Thanks to Takata’s efforts, Reiki spread throughout the Western world, evolving into various schools and traditions while maintaining its core principles.
Definition and Principles of Usui Reiki
Usui Reiki is a holistic healing practice that channels universal life force energy to promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The word “Reiki” is composed of two Japanese words: “Rei” meaning universal, and “Ki” meaning life energy.
At its core, Usui Reiki is guided by five principles:
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will be grateful.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to every living being.
These principles emphasize the importance of mindfulness, respect, integrity, and gratitude in everyday life.
How Usui Reiki Works
Usui Reiki operates on the premise that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s life force energy is low, we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
During a Reiki session, the practitioner acts as a channel for this universal life force energy. By placing their hands lightly on or just above different areas of the recipient’s body, the practitioner allows the energy to flow where it’s needed most. The recipient’s body then uses this energy to activate its natural healing processes.
Reiki is based on the idea that the body has an innate ability to heal itself, and the Reiki energy supports and accelerates this natural healing process. It works on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels, helping to create balance and harmony within the individual.
